Information from 2018-19 auditions
If you’re interested in the choir, why not Give It A Go at our Open Rehearsal on Tuesday 1 October 2019, 5.00-6.30pm, in the School of Music. This is an opportunity for you to come along, have a sing, and find out about the choir without any obligation. You will be able to sign up for an audition at that rehearsal.
Any member of the University of Leeds – undergraduate, postgraduate, or staff – is welcome to audition for the choir. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible. The choir does not conflict with other University performing groups, especially the Music Society Chamber Choir and OperaSoc, so it is certainly possible to participate in those activities as well as the Clothworkers Consort with some negotiation around particular dates.
Please ensure you print and bring with you a completed ‘Audition information sheet‘ (click to download editable Word file).

When you come for your audition, please arrive at least 10 minutes early and report to the School of Music reception, who will direct you to the appropriate waiting area.
Auditions last approx. 10 minutes and consist of the following elements:
- Scales to warm up and determine voice range
- Pitch memory tests
- Sight-reading tests (particularly important)
- A short, familiar melody to sing (usually “God Save the Queen” because most people know it – but you are welcome to sing anything else unaccompanied!)
There is no need to prepare anything for the auditions.
Please note that the choir covers a large amount of difficult repertoire in a relatively short time; a strong emphasis is therefore placed upon sight-reading ability and upon attendance at rehearsals. We meet weekly on Tuesdays 5-7pm in the concert hall (CCCH) in the School of Music.
